Testing and Configuring the Altera DE0 Nano FPGA

$(KGrHqV,!k8E+rCZTg-JBQDE4nujG!~~60_35Altera DE0 Nano contains a very good software/tool which actually is a control panel. It gives you an easy platform to make sure that the Development board is functioning properly. This blog post will have details on configuring the control panel and installing USB blaster drivers.

First of all you need to download few softwares in order to do anything with the board. The package it self contains all the software but somewhat older versions. Instead if you have resources you can directly download the software from Altera website following the link below.

This link allows you to download the whole package of softwares provided that you have an Altera account which is free of charge. Also the download is somewhere around 3GBs. Once you download this it will automatically install everything you need for the designs.

Once you installed everything then you can connect the board using the USB cable. Then windows will try to install the driver for the USB blaster and in my case it failed. So i had to go to the device manager and manually install or rather show windows where the drivers are located. You might need to do that, the path for the drivers is,

{Altera installation directory} / {Software version, ie: 12.1, etc } / quartus/drivers

Then windows will successfully install the drivers required. Then you will see that the USB blaster is in the working properly state.

Now is the time to use the DE0 control panel. This small app is located in the System CD which comes with the package. You can find the app at,

{System CD} / Tools / DE0_Nano_ControlPanel

Copy the folder to the host pc and just run the ‘DE0_Nano_ControlPanel.exe’  which is located inside the folder.
